March 2016 Challenge - Cell 4 Transformed

This month's challenge is all about exploring Kerry Mitchell's Cell 4 formula in lkm.ufm. In addition to using this formula we would like you to use one or more transformations (Mappings) to spice things up a little bit.

:new: UPDATE: March 5th
For those of you having problems accessing the formula author's notes on Cell 4 I've uploaded them here: Link

Even if you don't fully understand the text just note that the drop down lists on the formula tab (the "types") are for reference only - in themselves they don't do anything. They just tell you what the numbers you enter in the "string" slots below will do. Note too that if you enter "1" in any of the "string" slots this is the same as "do nothing".

Some ideas and starter parameters from around DA:

  • Two examples of Cell 4 used with (4,4) Tiling and with parameters:

Five Alarm Chili by miincdesign :bulletblack: UF-Chall Cell 4 Blossoms by Lupsiberg

    • One example of Cell 4 used with Semi Regular Tesselation V , also with parameters:

Cog in the Machinery by jim373

    • A couple of other examples of Cell 4 images with parameters... these do not use any transforms but may help you get started with your challenge images:

A few tips for you:
1. Some explanation of how the formula works can be found in the formula file. You can see this by using the Edit button on the Formula tab (or use Ctrl-Alt-E if you are using Windows). This will open the formula file for reading - scroll down to find Cell 4 and Kerry's comments or use Ctrl-F (Windows) to search for "Cell4".

2. Cell4 uses Inside colouring. Explore different colourings for different effects. Use a favourite colouring or look for something new.

3. Note that the drop down lists on the formula tab (the "types") are for reference only - in themselves they don't do anything. They just tell you what the numbers you enter in the "string" slots below will do. Note too that if you enter "1" in any of the "string" slots this is the same as "do nothing".

4. Try different mappings to alter the appearance of your design. Use one or more on the Mapping tab. Remember that the order in which they appear in the list matters - moving a mapping up or down in the list will change the effect you see.

5. Finally, do experiment with all of the parameters in the formula and in the transforms. Default values are just a basis for starting, they are not always the best or most interesting. So get twiddling!

Entries from all levels of ability are very welcome so please don't be shy... have a go and join in the fun! Above all enjoy the challenge, explore different colouring and transforms to decorate your Cell images.

At the end of the challenge we will ask the members to vote on their three favourite images with the top three or four images featured in a follow-up journal approximately one week later.

Challenge Rules - Please read these carefully.

Bullet; Green Submissions must use Cell4 formula together with at least one Mapping. If this is not a feature of all layers then the combination should form a strong visual part of the image.
Bullet; Green Images must be made using Ultra Fractal and uploaded to DA on or after:  1st March 2016. The challenge ends on 31st March 2016.
Bullet; Green You may enter up to THREE images to this challenge.
One entry may be exchanged if you think you have produced something better than something you already entered. Note us to arrange this. Please do not send notes to individual admins.
Bullet; Green Please mention this challenge and add a link to this journal -OR- our group icon in your comments: :iconultra-fractal-redux:
Bullet; Green Submit your entry to the Challenge Folder: LINK You need to be a group member to do this.

:bulletred: NO huge/ugly watermarks (that includes the DA watermark) and frames should be simple and unobtrusive.
:bulletred: NO Fractal Manipulations are allowed.
:bulletred: Minimal post-work only allowed (such as enhancing colours, sharpening and adding a signature).

We encourage you to share your parameters publicly if you can, as part of the ethos of this group.
As always, only formulas from the Public database are acceptable if you intend to share your parameters.

Questions or don't understand something? Please ask first as we do not wish to offend or upset anyone (and ourselves) by refusing an entry.

We look forward to seeing your entries. Happy fractalling!
